Attention Legion Family!  The Auxiliary is in the final week of collecting school supplies again this year for school children in need. Donations of school supplies can be dropped off at the Post on the table by the front door. Donated school supplies will be delivered to the Boys & Girls Club of Story County and Kate Mitchell Elementary School for distribution. Please be generous with your support and drop off your school supply donation at the Post by August 23rd. 

 

NOTE:  The American Legion Baseball World Series semi-final and final games will be broadcast on ESPNU on Monday, August 19th and Tuesday, August 20th. Here is a great opportunity to watch some great young folks play baseball and see one of the American Legion’s key programs in action. 

 

NOTE:  The American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary National Convention is being held in New Orleans from August 23rd to August 29th. Many of the sessions will be live streamed so Legion families nationwide can see first hand what is going on at the National Convention. The August 50/50 Drawing continues on. Sponsored by the Operations Committee the money collected this month will go toward the replacement of one of the Clubroom Air Conditioning Units that recently failed. As of August 17th the split was just over $200.00 and growing.

Sponsored by the Riders, the money raised this month will go to the Legacy Run where the donations collected will then go to the Children and Veteran’s Welfare Fund and the Department’s Veteran’s Emergency Fund.  

 

Currently the split is listed at $35 (and I suspect it is higher than that) and will hopefully grow. 

 

There are a lot of veterans and their families, especially in western Iowa, that need assistance from these funds following the recent floods and severe weather. This is a fun and painless way to help while even having the chance to make some money yourself.  We can make a difference here!

CARS & COFFEE – The Ames Performance Group (Ames Ford Lincoln) is holding it’s monthly Cars & Coffee event on Saturday, July 13th from 8:00 – 11:00 AM. The Ames Performance Group makes a donation to a local charity or project for each car that stops in for a visit during this event. For July, they have chosen the Ames Post and our efforts to replace missing veterans grave markers at Ames Municipal Cemetery. If you have time, please stop by and thank them for their generosity and for making a difference in our community!

Wreaths Across America Mobile Education Exhibit – is visiting Ames on July 2nd from 1:00 – 7:00 PM at the Quality Inn & Suites on East 13th Street. The exhibit represents the TEACH pillar of the Wreaths Across America mission, sharing information about our veterans and those that serve our country. A special tribute will be made to every Vietnam veteran who visits the Exhibit. Ames is  one of two stops in the state, so this is something special. See the attached flyer for more details. 

 

MAIN STREET FLAGS – As has been the tradition for many, many years, the Legion Family, with the support of the Ames Patriotic Council,  will take the lead on putting flags up on Main Street and along the Fourth of July Parade Route again this year. The flags will go up on Wednesday, July 3rd at 7:00 AM. The more help we can get, the faster and easier the task. The flags will be brought down on Sunday, July 7th at 5:00 PM (weather permitting).

Attention Baseball Fans!  The Post is organizing a trip for September 8 to Kansas City for the Minnesota Twins vs the Kansas City Royals. There is a sign-up sheet posted in the Clubroom. PLease sign up no later than June 30th so arrangements can be finalized. Seats for the game will be in the lower level on either the first or third base side.The trip is planned to depart from the Post at 8:00 AM and return around 9:00 PM. Cost is $96.50 (includes roundtrip bus fare, game ticket and driver gratuity). Beer is permitted on the bus in cans only.

Attention Baseball Fans!  The Post is organizing a trip for September 8 to Kansas City for the Minnesota Twins vs the Kansas City Royals. There is a sign-up sheet posted in the Clubroom. The trip is planned to depart from the Post at 8:00 AM and return around 9:00 PM. Cost is $96.50. 

 

50/50 Raffle Update:  

 

The May 5050/50 Raffle is over. Congratulations to Kathy MacCrea who took home $292.50 for winning the raffle.  

 

The June 50/50 Raffle is being sponsored by the Sons and the money raised this month will also go to help purchase bronze veteran grave markers to help replace those markers that are damaged or missing at Ames Municipal  Cemetery.

NOTE:  Legion Riders Escort – The Legion Riders will be escorting a Legion Member from the County Line to the Ames Veterans Memorial and then on to Ames Municipal Cemetery on Sunday, May 26th. There will be a small ceremony at the Ames Municipal Cemetery between 5:00 and 5:30 at the headstone of David Stone, an Ames resident, who was lost when the USS SCORPION (SSN-589) went down with all hands in the Atlantic around May 22, 1968. All Legion family Members are invited to attend the ceremony in honor of one of Ames’ own.

Legion Family Day

Join us on April 27th for our Legion Family Fun Day from 1:00 -3:00PM at the Walnut Shelter at Inis Grove Park (24th & Grand Ave). There will be lots of activities and information about our Legion Family and our impact on the community. Invite your friends, neighbors and co-workers. Let’s spread the word about everything the contributions our Legion Family brings to the Ames community.

The Riders have made arrangements with the Ames Redemption Center located at 5820 Lincoln Way in west Ames to drop off your cans & bottles during their open hours. Tell them that they are for Wreaths Across America and the Riders will get the credit. Remember, cans and bottles need to be clean and separated and glass bottles need to be delivered in boxes to prevent breakage. 

 

50/50 Raffle Update:  

 

The April 5050/50 Raffle is underway and the current split is at least $105.00. Sponsored by the Legionnaires, the money raised this month will go to help purchase bronze veteran grave markers to help replace those markers that are damaged or missing at Ames Municipal  Cemetery.  Please participate in the raffle and help fund this great cause.

Loom Training:  Interested in learning how to operate the Loom in support of the Auxiliary’s ongoing project of making sleeping mats out of plarn (plastic bag yarn), then come on down to the Post on Monday, March 25th at 5:00 PM to learn how. It is not hard, but there are some tricks to operating the loom to make weaving these plarn mats easier. Can’t make it to this training session – then watch the weekly update for more training opportunities to be held in the near future. 

 

March Madness:  The Post is a great place to watch March Madness! There will be several Iowa teams in both the Mens’ and Women’s NCAA Tournament this year and coverage of March Madness will be on several different stations simultaneously. The Post has that covered! Watch four different games at one time! 

 

Should Iowa State or Iowa be playing in a game scheduled for tip off before the scheduled opening time for the Post, every effort will be made to open at least 15 minutes prior to the tip off of that game. Come on down and enjoy the fun and competitive  atmosphere that comes out during March Madness and cheer on your favorite team!

National Vice Commander VIsit:  National Vice Commander Richard Vail (from Kansas) will be at the Post for dinner on Wednesday, March 20th, accompanied by Department Commander Stan Elliot (from our own Post) from 5:30 until at least 7:00 PM. Vice Commander Vail is interested in meeting with members of our entire Legion Family. Let’s show him the fantastic hospitality that the Post 37 Family is known for and across the state and get some of your questions about the Legion and the areas of focus for the year answered.

DEPARTMENT MID-WINTER CONFERENCE:  The Department Mid-Winter Conference will be held at the Des Moines Airport Holiday Inn & Conference Center on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and will include a Joint Session on Friday evening with all Legion Family Members, informational meetings and District Meetings on Saturday and culminating with the Department Oratorical Contest on Sunday Morning. If you have not attended a Mid-Winter Conference, this is a great opportunity to do so. The weather forecast is cooperating and you will be surprised at how much you learn and how much fun you can have.

The January 50/50 Raffle is just about over with the drawing to be held on Wednesday, January 31st at 8:45 PM.  The current prize level at $105.00. The project the SAL is supporting this month is additional funding for the replacement of the kitchen lights in the basement.

Many of you know that John was a key figure in putting on the Post’s Fish Fry’s and his family has chosen to honor his memory by coordinating yet another one of these key fundraisers for the Post in his honor by donating their time and the meal in support of place John cared so deeply about.

ACADEMIC AWARDS CEREMONY – The Post, along with Ames High School, will  be hosting our Annual Academic Awards Ceremony on Thursday, October 5th at 6:00 PM at Ames High School. Come out and help us recognize over 350 Ames High students who have achieved grade point averages of 3.50 or greater during the past year.

The September 50/50 raffle is still underway and it is not too late to participate. Sponsored by the Legion Riders, this month’s proceeds will go towards their Wreaths Across America Project here in Ames. Let’s help the Riders achieve their goal of raising enough money to purchase wreaths for all of the veterans graves at the three cemeteries in the city. LAst check, the payout was over $100.00 and growing. 

 

WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA – 

The Riders are approaching the end of this year’s Wreaths Across America Campaign and they can still use the help and sponsorship of the Post Family. NOTE:  DOWNTOWN FLAGS – VOLUNTEERS NEEDED – 

We will be coordinating the installation of flags along Main Street, 5th Street and perhaps the corner on 6th Street at 7:00 AM on Saturday, July 1st in support of the Fourth of July. We need to be done with Main Street by 8:00 AM so we are not interfered with the set-up with the Farmer’s Market. We will also be putting flags up along the parade route, which we have not done recently. As they say, many hands make the work go faster, so if you can help, please meet at the Post no later than 6:55 AM so we can effectively allocate our volunteer resources.

As we enter into the busy Memorial Day Weekend there are several annual activities that the Post Family needs assistance with:

 

The Auxiliary needs help with their annual Poppy Days Drive. If you can spare an hour or two, please let President Rachel know – they can use all the help they can get with this annual fundraising event. You can contact her at rsbreyfogle@gmail.com .

 

We will be placing flags on the graves of all veterans at the Ames Municipal Cemetery. You can help the Sons with that event on Thursday at 5:00 PM. 

 

We can also use help putting the Main Street Flags up on Friday morning at 7:00 AM. 

 

The Post Family will be hosting the Annual Memorial Day Luncheon on Monday, May 29th after the City’s Annual Memorial Day Parade & Tribute. Assistance in helping put that luncheon on is also needed. Please contact the Post at 515-232-9980 or Commander Jay at jj_sisco@yahoo.com if you can help.

Memorial Day Weekend will soon be upon us and as a Post Family we have a lot going on and we need assistance in supporting several events.

 

Assistance is needed:

Thursday, May 25th at 5:00 PM at Ames Municipal Cemetery to put up grave marker flags

Friday, May 26th:  at 7:00 AM to put up Main Street Flags; and,

                              throughout the day with Auxiliary Poppy Sales

Saturday, May 27th:   throughout the day with Auxiliary Poppy Day Sales

Monday, May 29th:  City’s Memorial Day Parade   10:30 AM;

                                 City’s Memorial Day Ceremony   11:00 AM   Ames Municipal Cemetery;

                                 Memorial Day Luncheon at the Post (volunteers needed at 11:00 AM); and,

                                 at 5:00 PM to bring down the Main Street Flags

Tuesday, May 30th at 5:00 PM to retrieve the graveside flags at Ames Municipal Cemetery

STORY COUNTY MEETING NOTE:   A Joint Meeting of the Story County Legion Posts and Auxiliary Units will be held on Thursday, March 16th at the Story City American Legion Post, 301 Washington Street. NOTE:  Department Mid-Winter Conference– The Department Mid-Winter Conference will be held at the Des Moines Airport Holiday Inn and Conference Center on Friday, February 10th though noon on Sunday, February 12th. This is an opportunity to learn more about the Department and National Organizations efforts to implement our Legion Family programs, meet candidates for National and Department offices (the folks who represent us at the State and National levels of the organization), listen to the Department Oratorical finals, meet other significant individuals who we provide support to with our programs, interact with Legion Family members from across the state, and just plain have fun! If you have never attended a Department Mid-Winter Conference, here is your chance! You will be pleasantly surprised at how enjoyable the weeknd events can be!

NOTE:  NATIONAL QUILTS OF VALOR SEW DAY – February 4th marks the 10th anniversary of National Sew Day for the Quilts of Valor Foundation (QOVF). Several members of our Legion members have been honored to receive one of these beautiful quilts. The Ames Auxiliary Unit will be hosting a sew day on Saturday, February 4th from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM at the Post to mark the occasion and to gather together to further the mission of the QOVF – to honor and cover every veteran with a comforting and healing Quilt of Valor. So bring your sewing machine, and whatever else you need – some fabric and patterns will be provided. You don’t have to know how to sew, there are many other “tasks” that you can participate in. All are invited to join us and we hope to see many of our friends from throughout the state. A free lunch will be provided and snacks are always appreciated. NOTE:  VOLUNTEERS NEEDED – Our Legion Riders Chapter will be picking up the Christmas Wreaths that were placed on the graves of all of the veterans resting in Ames Municipal  Cemetery over the Christmas Holidays on Saturday, January 21st at 8:00 AM. Many hands make for light work. All assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Happy New Year!

 

The first of our monthly 50/50 drawings ended on December 31st with the proceeds going to help update/repair the sprinkler system in the walk-in cooler. Congratulations to Sharon Bellinghausen who took home $477.50 from the drawing. 

 

The Monthly 50/50 Raffle throughout January will be used to support the Post’s Annual Academic Awards Program at Ames High School to purchase Academic Letters and pins used to recognize sustained superior academic performance.
